When do you need a crown or bridge?

A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. A bridge is a row of two or more crowns joined together to fill a gap. These are the usual reasons.

Not sure if you need one? Come in for an exam. We show you the tooth on the X-ray and go over every option.

  • A tooth is cracked or wornAnd a filling is too small to hold it together.
  • A cavity is very largeNot enough healthy tooth is left to support a filling.
  • You had a root canalThe tooth often needs a crown to stay strong.
  • A tooth is missingA bridge can fill the gap using the teeth on each side.
  • An old crown is loose or wornOr decay has started at its edge.

A crown in two visits

The tooth is shaped on the first visit, and the finished crown is fitted on the second, usually two to three weeks later. In between, a temporary crown protects the tooth.

1. Exam and plan30–45 minutes

X-rays, a look at the tooth, and your options and prices in writing. Often done on the same day as the shaping.

2. Shaping the tooth60–90 minutes

With the tooth numbed, the dentist removes decay and trims the tooth so the crown fits over it. A digital scan or impression records the shape.

3. Temporary crownSame visit

A temporary crown covers the tooth while the lab makes yours. Avoid sticky food and floss by sliding the floss out sideways.

4. Your final crown30–60 minutes

We remove the temporary, check the fit and color, and cement the crown. We check your bite before you leave.

Crown, bridge or implant?

Each one suits a different situation. Your dentist looks at the tooth, the teeth around it and your bone before recommending one.

  • Crown

You still have the tooth, but it is cracked, worn, very decayed or had a root canal.

A cap covers the tooth and holds it together.

    Time
    2 visits, 2 to 3 weeks
    In its favor
    Keeps your own tooth
    Keep in mind
    Needs enough healthy tooth underneath
  • Bridge

A tooth is missing, and the teeth on each side are healthy enough to carry crowns.

Crowns on the neighboring teeth hold a false tooth between them.

    Time
    2 visits, 2 to 3 weeks
    In its favor
Faster than an implant and fixed in place
    Keep in mind
    The neighboring teeth are trimmed
  • Implant

A tooth is missing, or can’t be saved, and your jawbone is healthy enough to hold a post.

A titanium post goes in the jaw and a crown goes on top.

    Time
    4 to 6 visits, 3 to 6 months
    In its favor
Stands alone and leaves neighboring teeth untouched
    Keep in mind
Takes months to heal and costs more up front

An implant is the longest process of the three. Read how implants work, step by step, with example prices.

What a visit is like

We talk first, and we explain each step as we go. Raise a hand and we pause.

  1. You pick the timeBook online or call. We’re open Saturdays until 2 pm.
  2. We show you the toothOn screen, with the X-ray. You see what we see.
  3. We check you’re numbWe test it before we start and ask how you feel as we go.
  4. You leave with a planNext steps, timing and an estimate in writing.

After your crown

The first weeks

Your tooth may feel sensitive to hot and cold for a few days or weeks after the crown goes on.

Eating

Wait until the numbness is gone. With a temporary crown, skip chewing gum and sticky candy.

Every day

Brush and floss like your other teeth. For a bridge, a floss threader or water flosser cleans underneath.

Call us if

The crown feels high, comes loose, or the pain gets worse instead of better.

What a crown costs, in writing

The price follows the material and, for a bridge, the number of teeth. Here is an example for a single crown.

What changes the price
  • The material: porcelain, zirconia or metal
  • Whether the tooth needs a build-up first
  • How many teeth a bridge spans
  • Front or back tooth
Insurance

Many PPO plans pay about half of a crown, up to the plan’s yearly maximum. Some plans wait several months after you join. We check your benefits first.

Paying over time

Financing spreads the cost into monthly payments through a third-party lender. Ask the front desk for the options.

Questions about crowns and bridges

The ones we hear most. Ask us anything else at your visit.

How much does a dental crown cost in Miami?

The example estimate above shows a range for a single porcelain crown. The real price depends on the material, the tooth and whether it needs a build-up. We give it to you in writing first.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed, so most patients feel pressure but not pain. Afterwards, the gum and tooth can be sore for a few days, usually eased with over-the-counter pain relief.

How long does a crown last?

Most crowns last 10 to 15 years, and many last longer with good brushing, flossing and regular checkups. Grinding your teeth can shorten that, and a night guard can help.

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. The teeth on each side of the gap get crowns, and a false tooth in between joins them. It is fixed in place, so you do not take it out.

Crown, bridge or implant: how do I choose?

A crown saves a tooth you still have. A bridge or an implant replaces a missing one. A bridge is faster and an implant leaves the neighboring teeth alone. The comparison above lists the details.

Can I get a crown the same day?

Not at Brisa. We make your crown at a dental lab so the fit and color are right, which takes two to three weeks. You wear a temporary crown in the meantime.
