Is whitening right for you?
Dr. Arenas checks your teeth and gums first, because cavities and gum problems get treated before you whiten. These are the usual reasons people ask about it.
Not sure? A short exam tells you whether whitening fits and what to expect.
- Coffee, tea or wine stainsStains on the surface lift well.
- Teeth that darkened with ageEnamel thins over time, and the layer under it shows through.
- An event coming upIn-office whitening takes one visit.
- Healthy teeth and gumsCavities and gum problems are treated first.
- Fillings or crowns in frontThey do not change color, so we plan the shade around them.
In the office or at home?
Both use a peroxide-based gel that lifts stains from the enamel. The difference is who applies it and how quickly you see it. Some patients do both.

What “two shades lighter” looks like
Dentists compare tooth color on a shade guide, from darker to lighter. Pick a starting shade to see where about two shades lighter lands.
Starting at shade 3, about 2 shades lighter lands near shade 5.

What your visit is like
In-office whitening is one appointment of about an hour. Take-home trays take two short visits: one for a scan of your teeth, one to try the trays on.
- You pick the timeBook online or call. We are open Saturdays until 2 pm.
- We check your starting shadeA quick exam and a shade guide, so you know where you begin.
- We protect your gumsA barrier covers your gums, so only your teeth meet the whitening gel.
- We whiten and compareThe gel goes on in short rounds. Then we check the shade with you.
After whitening
The first 48 hours
Teeth stain more easily right after. Go easy on coffee, tea, red wine and dark sauces, or use a straw.
Sensitivity
Some teeth feel zingy for a day or two. A toothpaste made for sensitive teeth helps. Tell us if it lasts longer.
Touch-ups
Stains come back with coffee and time. Many patients use their trays and a little gel once or twice a year.
Fillings and crowns
They stay the same color, so a much lighter shade can make them stand out. We talk about this first.
What whitening costs, in writing
You get the price before we start. Here is what an estimate looks like, with example prices for an in-office visit plus trays for home.
What changes the price
- In-office, at-home, or both
- How dark your teeth are to start
- Whether you need new trays
- How many touch-up syringes you take
Insurance
Whitening is cosmetic, so most dental plans do not cover it. If you are due for a cleaning or an exam, that part may be covered. We tell you before you pay.
Paying over time
Whitening is usually paid at the visit. If you would like to spread it out, ask us about financing or the membership plan.

Questions about teeth whitening
The ones we hear most. Ask us anything else at your visit.
How much does teeth whitening cost in Miami?
The example estimate above shows typical ranges for in-office whitening, trays and touch-up gel. Your price depends on the method and how dark your teeth are, and we give it to you in writing first.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
It should not hurt, but some teeth get sensitive for a day or two. We protect your gums during the visit and can give you a sensitivity toothpaste or gel. Tell us if it feels too strong and we pause.
How long does whitening last?
It depends on what you eat and drink and whether you smoke. Stains come back slowly. Many patients touch up once or twice a year with their trays.
In-office or at-home whitening: which should I choose?
In-office whitening shows a change in one visit, which suits an event. Take-home trays are gentler and cost less, and they keep working for touch-ups. Some patients do both.
Is whitening safe for my enamel?
Whitening supervised by a dentist and used as directed is considered safe for healthy teeth. Overusing strong products can irritate gums and make teeth sensitive, so we set the strength and the schedule with you.
Does insurance cover teeth whitening?
Usually not, because whitening is cosmetic. A cleaning or exam on the same day may be covered. We tell you what is likely to be covered before you pay.
